Ethiopian orthodox tewahedo church Debre Hail Kedus Gabriel Cathedral DC.
Our Story
Founded in the early 1990s by Ethiopian Orthodox Christians in the D.C. area, Debre Hail Kedus Gabriel Cathedral was established to preserve the ancient faith, language, and liturgical traditions of Ethiopia in the diaspora. What began as a gathering of faithful families has grown into one of the largest and most vibrant Ethiopian Orthodox communities in the United States.
Our cathedral, named after Saint Gabriel—the holy messenger and protector—is a spiritual sanctuary for generations of worshippers. We continue to serve as a cornerstone of faith, identity, and unity for Ethiopian Americans and all who are drawn to the beauty of Orthodox Christianity.
Our Belief
We believe in one God the Father almighty, maker of heaven, earth and all things visible and invisible. By Him all things were made, and Without Him was not anything in heaven or earth made.
Our mission
Our mission is to nurture the soul, preserve tradition, and serve with compassion.
Spiritual Nourishment: We aim to deepen faith through prayer, teaching, and sacramental life.
Cultural Preservation: We celebrate Ethiopian heritage, liturgical language (Ge’ez), music, and holy celebrations.
Community Support: Through charitable outreach, education, and counseling, we uplift individuals and families.
Youth Engagement: We inspire the next generation with spiritual formation, language classes, and cultural events.
